Clariant has completed the transition to an additive portfolio that is completely free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This underscores the chemical company's commitment to more sustainable and customer-oriented product development. The transition to PFAS-free additives reflects the company's deep understanding of its customers' needs and its ongoing commitment to environmental protection. By eliminating PFAS from its entire additive portfolio, Clariant is offering its customers sustainable alternatives without compromising on performance. This step ensures that Clariant's customers can confidently meet evolving regulatory requirements. At the same time, they can follow the global trend toward greener manufacturing processes.

Clariant proactively transitions to PFAS-free additives

The switch to PFAS-free additives was completed in December 2023. This step underscores the company's commitment to meeting the growing global demand for sustainable solutions. By moving ahead of schedule, Clariant is not only protecting the environment, but also ensuring that its customers can adapt quickly and seamlessly to upcoming regulations.

Innovative PFAS-free products

Clariant's product portfolio includes “Ceridust 8170 M”, a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-free texturing agent for powder coatings. Compared to products containing PTFE, it offers superior performance with lower energy consumption.

This new development helps customers reduce Scope 1 emissions while realizing significant cost savings. In addition, the newly introduced, more environmentally friendly "AddWorks PPA" product line of polymer processing aids enables the control of melt fracture, efficient extrusion and improved film quality.

Stefan Brejc, Global Vice President Segment Coatings & Adhesives, emphasizes Clariant’s innovative approach, stating: "Our commitment to greater chemistry drives us to continuously develop sustainable solutions that reduce environmental impact while meeting the performance demands of our customers. The PFAS-free additive portfolio is the result of years of dedicated research and collaboration with our partners.”

Clariant plans further PFAS-free product launches by 2025

Clariant is expanding its portfolio of sustainable product developments with a growing pipeline of PFAS-free products. It is also adding effective initiatives to promote meaningful collaboration with customers.

Growing industry concern about PFAS

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a major concern for industries worldwide due to their persistence in the environment and potential health risks. As regulators are introducing tighter controls on the use of PFAS, industries are seeking safer alternatives. Clariant's actions to eliminate PFAS are in line with these global efforts and position the company as a frontrunner in reducing environmental and health risks, while driving industry-wide change toward more sustainable practices.
